Residential Asbestos Testing
Many older homes may contain building materials that contain asbestos. When these materials are disturbed during home renovations, asbestos fibres may become airborne inside the home. Homeowners can submit samples of building materials (pipe insulation, floor tiles, ceiling stipple, etc) and know for sure if the materials in their homes contain asbestos before starting renovation projects. Results can be available as quickly as next business day. A report that outlines the results is provided for the homeowners records to show contractors and home renovation companies.
Household materials which may contain asbestos include the following:
- Boiler and pipe insulation
- floor tiles and sheet flooring
- Mastic under floor tiles and flooring
- ceiling stipple / spackle
- Wall plaster
- ceiling tiles
- Vermiculite in attic
- joint compound
Samples can be dropped off at 5 Donwood Drive, Winnipeg, MB. Our hours are from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM Monday through Friday.
Analysis of Non-Vermiculite Asbestos Bulk Samples.
5 Business Days = $50 for first sample / $40 per additional sample.
2 Business Days = $70 for first sample / $55 per additional sample.
Next Day (samples must be received by 11 AM) = $100 for first sample / $80 per additional sample.
Vermiculite samples must be analyzed using TEM (Transmission Electron Microscopy) which a more precise and therefore more expensive analytical process.
Analysis of Vermiculite Samples

5 Business Days = $140 for first sample / $100 for additional samples
2 Business Days = $200 for first sample / $150 for additional samples
These prices already include the GST. Samples must be received by 11 AM to counted as received on that day. Samples received later than 11 AM will be counted as received the following business day. Payment can be made by cash, check, credit card or debit card. A small piece the size of a postage stamp can be collected and sealed in a ziploc bag.
Asbestos is a confirmed human carcinogen. Due to its use in building materials and products, asbestos can still be found in many commercial, industrial and residential buildings. In light of the hazard that asbestos can present, there are requirements for working with or having asbestos in your building or workplace. These include the requirement to compile an inventory of where asbestos is in your building, periodic inspections of asbestos containing material, worker education and signage/labeling of asbestos-containing material.
Sources of asbestos in a building may include;
- asbestos cement pipes, wallboard, shingles, siding, and roofing,
- vinyl and asphalt flooring, including the backing and mastics,
- acoustic, decorative wall and ceiling plaster, paints, spackles, and coatings,
- ceiling tiles, and lay-in panels,
- thermal insulation, including spray-applied, blown-in, boiler, breeching, pipe, tank, and vessel,
- fireproofing material, including, blankets, curtains, counter tops, gloves, electrical wiring
- insulation, cloth, and structural insulation,
- flexible fabric duct connections and insulation,
- packing materials, gaskets, felts, caulking, putties, joint compounds, and adhesives, and,
- interior surfaces of ductwork in buildings contaminated with asbestos.
Asbestos Inspection and Air Monitoring Services
Asbestos abatement must be performed under strict controls as required by government regulation and guidelines. Winnipeg Air Testing will provide independent inspections during a project to ensure and document that the abatement was conducted properly. Inspections of the enclosure should be performed prior to the disturbing of the asbestos (this includes testing the negative pressure of the enclosure). All of our staff know the legal requirements of an abatement site. Air clearance testing must be conducted inside of the enclosure prior to it being dismantled. All samples are collected using NIOSH Analytical Methods and samples analyzed at an AIHA-accredited laboratory.
Asbestos Building Surveys / Audits
Surveys are conducted to meet the specific client circumstances and requirements including:
- Surveys for Regulatory Compliance and Management
- Building audits and asbestos inventories
- Semiannual inspections of asbestos-containing material
- Property Transfer Surveys
- Pre-abatment Specification Surveys for Renovation or Demolition
Provincial guidelines recommend that asbestos-containing material be inspected every 6 months to ensure that the material is in good condition and has not been damaged. Winnipeg Air Testing will come to your workplace and do a semiannual inspection and provide an independent report on the status of the asbestos in your buildings.
Asbestos Bulk Analysis
Workplaces, commercial building owners and contractors often perform renovations and repairs involving or around material that may contain asbestos. Sampling of the suspicious material can be performed in a timely fashion to minimize the delay in the project.
Winnipeg Air Testing can have the sample of a material suspected to contain asbestos analyzed to confirm or eliminate the presence of asbestos. All work is performed by an AIHA-accredited laboratory. This can be done using either Polarized Light Microscopy (PLM), and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) but PLM is by far the most common types of analysis. The results indicate the type of asbestos present in the sample and its percent composition (e.g., chrysotile asbestos, 10% content). The lower limit of quantifiable detection is 0.5 to 1%.
We can collect samples of material suspected to contain asbestos or simply pick them up. Results can be available as quickly as you need them: from next day to five business days. Pricing varies with volume and turnaround time.
Using Winnipeg Air Testing’s residential asbestos testing services is fast and inexpensive. Homeowners can collect a sample themselves, put it in a ziploc bag, and drop off or mail in a sample to have it tested. We use an accredited laboratory to analyze the samples and send the results to the homeowner. Based on our volume of samples, we can provide the service at less cost to homeowners.
Winnipeg Air Testing offers courses on working with and around asbestos. The course is taught by a former government inspector who is familiar with the provincial requirements for asbestos. The most popular course is a half day course for managing asbestos in your building.
